A vulnerability was found in ProFTPD up to 1.3.3 (File Transfer Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component mod_sftpd. Integer overflow in the mod_sftp (aka SFTP) module in ProFTPD 1.3.3d and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption leading to OOM kill) via a malformed SSH message.
The weakness was published 02/08/2011 by kingcope with ProFTPD Team (Website). The advisory is available at bugs.proftpd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-1137 since 03/02/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by kingcope and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52600 (Debian DSA-2185-1 : proftpd-dfsg - integer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 1.3.3d eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at proftpd.org. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
