Details
A vulnerability was found in Postfix. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The STARTTLS implementation in Postfix 2.4.x before 2.4.16, 2.5.x before 2.5.12, 2.6.x before 2.6.9, and 2.7.x before 2.7.3 does not properly restrict I/O buffering, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to insert commands into encrypted SMTP sessions by sending a cleartext command that is processed after TLS is in place, related to a "plaintext command injection" attack.
The bug was discovered 01/05/2011. The weakness was presented 03/08/2011 by Wietse Venema as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-0411 since 01/11/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 61 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68249 (Oracle Linux 6 : postfix (ELSA-2011-0423)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27359 (ProFTPD "mod_sftp" module and TLS implementation Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11309.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65932), Tenable (68249), SecurityFocus (BID 46767†), OSVDB (71021†) and Secunia (SA43646†). See VDB-4290, VDB-56911, VDB-56855 and VDB-56854 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
