Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Frederik Vermeulen netqmail 1.06 (Mail Server Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file qmail-smtpd.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The STARTTLS implementation in qmail-smtpd.c in qmail-smtpd in the netqmail-1.06-tls patch for netqmail 1.06 does not properly restrict I/O buffering, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to insert commands into encrypted SMTP sessions by sending a cleartext command that is processed after TLS is in place, related to a "plaintext command injection" attack, a similar issue to CVE-2011-0411.
The weakness was shared 03/16/2011 by Wietse Venema as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1431 since 03/16/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52611 (SMTP Service STARTTLS Plaintext Command Injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SMTP problems.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11309.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65932), Tenable (52611), SecurityFocus (BID 46767†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-30630†).
