The STARTTLS implementation in the server in Ipswitch IMail 11.03 and earlier does not properly restrict I/O buffering, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to insert commands into encrypted SMTP sessions by sending a cleartext command that is processed after TLS is in place, related to a "plaintext command injection" attack, a similar issue to CVE-2011-0411.
The weakness was presented 03/07/2011 by Wietse Venema as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-1430 since 03/16/2011. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52611 (SMTP Service STARTTLS Plaintext Command Injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SMTP problems.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11309.
