Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.25.8 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function get_user_pages. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Linux kernel 2.6.24 and 2.6.25 before 2.6.25.9 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large number of calls to the get_user_pages function, which lacks a ZERO_PAGE optimization and results in allocation of "useless newly zeroed pages."
The bug was discovered 06/24/2008. The weakness was disclosed 07/02/2008 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at issues.rpath.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2372 since 05/21/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 158 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40007 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (kernel-67)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165693 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2008:035)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46451), Tenable (40007), OSVDB (48116†), Secunia (SA30901†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-19989†). The entries VDB-34127, VDB-43118, VDB-43111 and VDB-43008 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
