Linux Kernel 2.6.17 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.17 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Linux kernel before 2.6.18, when running on x86_64 systems, does not properly save or restore EFLAGS during a context switch, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) by causing SYSENTER to set an NT flag, which can trigger a crash on the IRET of the next task.

The bug was discovered 06/15/2007. The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2006 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5755 since 11/06/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 197 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67758 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2008-0957)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117213 (CentOS Security Update for kernel (CESA-2008:0957)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.18 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46451), Tenable (67758), SecurityFocus (BID 26060†), OSVDB (31464†) and Secunia (SA24098†). The entries VDB-2663, VDB-39622, VDB-43717 and VDB-43007 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
