Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in pcre 7.7 (Programming Tool Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the file pcre_compile.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in pcre_compile.c in the Perl-Compatible Regular Expression (PCRE) library 7.7 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a regular expression that begins with an option and contains multiple branches.
The bug was discovered 06/30/2008. The weakness was published 07/07/2008 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2371 since 05/21/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
