A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft Exchange Srv 2007 Sp1 (Groupware Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Outlook Web Access. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Outlook Web Access (OWA) for Exchange Server 2003 SP2 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via unspecified HTML, a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-2247.
The bug was discovered 07/08/2008. The weakness was presented 07/08/2008 with Context Information Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2248 since 05/16/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90444 (Microsoft Outlook Web Access for Exchange Server Elevation of Privilege (MS08-039)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6227.
