Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in h5io up to 0.2.5. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function read_hdf5 of the component HDF5. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
h5io before 0.2.6 contains a code injection vulnerability in read_hdf5() that allows attackers to execute arbitrary code by supplying a crafted HDF5 file. Attackers can store Python code in a node titled timezone, which _triage_read() passes to eval() with builtins reachable, name an arbitrary module in class or custom-object nodes that _import_class() imports, or place pickled objects in pd_dataframe or pd_series nodes that pandas deserializes on read.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-120499 since 11/02/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
Upgrading to version 0.2.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
