A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 4.x (Smartphone Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. WebKit in Apple Safari before 5.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.6 and Windows, and before 4.1.1 on Mac OS X 10.4; and webkitgtk before 1.2.6; allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted regular expression.
The weakness was disclosed 03/10/2011 by Natalie Silvanovich (team509) with Google Security Team as HT4564 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-1792 since 05/06/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/19/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49246 (Fedora 13 : webkitgtk-1.2.4-1.fc13 (2010-14409)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155514 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for WebKitGTK(ELSA-2011-0177)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10064.
