Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 SP2 and 2010; Office 2004, 2008, and 2011 for Mac; Open XML File Format Converter for Mac; Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats SP2; PowerPoint Viewer; PowerPoint Viewer 2007 SP2; and PowerPoint Web App do not properly validate TimeColorBehaviorContainer Floating Point records in PowerPoint documents, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted document containing an invalid record, aka "Floating Point Techno-color Time Bandit RCE Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 04/12/2011 with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MS11-022 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0655 since 01/28/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53379 (MS11-022: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2489283)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110148 (Microsoft PowerPoint Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-022)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS11-022 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10822.
