Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Wordpad. The manipulation as part of a Word 97 Document leads to a code injection vulnerability. WordPad in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3 and Server 2003 SP2 does not properly parse fields in Word documents, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted .doc file, aka "WordPad Converter Parsing Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 04/12/2011 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research as MS11-033 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-0028 since 12/10/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90693 (Microsoft WordPad Text Converters Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-033)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS11-033 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10996.
