Vim up to 7.1 Python code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Vim up to 7.1. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Python. Such manipulation leads to code injection. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-3294. No exploit exists. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Vim up to 7.1 (Word Processing Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component Python. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

src/configure.in in Vim 5.0 through 7.1, when used for a build with Python support, does not ensure that the Makefile-conf temporary file has the intended ownership and permissions, which allows local users to execute arbitrary code by modifying this file during a time window, or by creating it ahead of time with permissions that prevent its modification by configure.

The bug was discovered 07/17/2008. The weakness was disclosed 07/24/2008 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-3294 since 07/24/2008. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34374 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2008-007)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (43886), Tenable (34374), SecurityFocus (BID 31681†), OSVDB (47079†) and Secunia (SA31159†). The entries VDB-36812, VDB-40924, VDB-40923 and VDB-40501 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
