Apple iTunes up to 6.0.5 DNS Cache code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple iTunes (Multimedia Player Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component DNS Cache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Apple iTunes before 10.5.1 does not properly verify the authenticity of updates, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary code via a Trojan horse update, as demonstrated by evilgrade and DNS cache poisoning.

The weakness was published 08/01/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at infobyte.com.ar. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-3434. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56872 (iTunes < 10.5.1 Update Authenticity Verification Weakness (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119747 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.5.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2011-11-14-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (56443), Tenable (56872), SecurityFocus (BID 50672†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-33882†).
