Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.32.63 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function proc_ns_follow_link. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability.
The issue has been introduced in 12/03/2009. The weakness was released 06/23/2014 by Vladimir Davydov with Parallels as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-0203 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:
We end up trying to kfree() nd.last.name on open("/mnt/tmp", O_CREAT) if /mnt/tmp is an autofs direct mount. The reason is that nd.last_type is bogus here; we want LAST_BIND for everything of that kind and we get LAST_NORM left over from finding parent directory.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1663 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77489 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS : linux-ec2 vulnerabilities (USN-2333-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195598 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-ec2 Vulnerabilities (USN-2333-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:
nd->last_type = LAST_BIND;
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93913), Tenable (77489), SecurityFocus (BID 68125†), Secunia (SA59309†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45165†).
