Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in VMware Workstation, Player, ACE and Server (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown). This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
hcmon.sys in VMware Workstation 6.5.1 and earlier, VMware Player 2.5.1 and earlier, VMware ACE 2.5.1 and earlier, and VMware Server 1.0.x before 1.0.9 build 156507 and 2.0.x before 2.0.1 build 156745 uses the METHOD_NEITHER communication method for IOCTLs, which allows local users to cause a denial of service via a crafted IOCTL request.
The weakness was presented 08/21/2008 by Laurent Gaffie (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3761. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36117 (VMware Products Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2009-0005/VMSA-2009-0007)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116348 (VMware Hosted Products, VI Client and Patches for ESX (VMSA-2009-0005 )).
