Summary
A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Apple Mac OS X. Affected is an unknown function. Performing a manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2010-0740. Moreover, an exploit is present. You should upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple Mac OS X (Operating System) (affected version not known). This affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ssl3_get_record function in ssl/s3_pkt.c in OpenSSL 0.9.8f through 0.9.8m allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a malformed record in a TLS connection that triggers a NULL pointer dereference, related to the minor version number. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The weakness was disclosed 06/24/2011 by Adam Langley as HT4723 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-0740 since 02/26/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Andi and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78126 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : OpenSSL vulnerability (SOL11533)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185029 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02517)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10742.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (57163), Exploit-DB (12334), Tenable (78126), SecurityFocus (BID 39013†) and Secunia (SA45054†). The entries VDB-51551, VDB-52079, VDB-57783 and VDB-57782 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
