Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8m (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function kssl_keytab_is_available of the component Configuration File. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The kssl_keytab_is_available function in ssl/kssl.c in OpenSSL before 0.9.8n, when Kerberos is enabled but Kerberos configuration files cannot be opened, does not check a certain return value, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via SSL cipher negotiation, as demonstrated by a chroot installation of Dovecot or stunnel without Kerberos configuration files inside the chroot.
The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was shared 03/05/2010 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.balabit.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0433. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1704 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45359 (OpenSSL < 0.9.8n Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185029 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02517)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8k eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (57188), Tenable (45359), SecurityFocus (BID 38533†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25180†). The entries VDB-4377 and VDB-51551 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
