A vulnerability has been found in Apple cups 1.2.2/1.3.7/1.3.9/1.4.1 (Printing Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function _cupsGetlang of the file lppasswd.c. The _cupsGetlang function, as used by lppasswd.c in lppasswd in CUPS 1.2.2, 1.3.7, 1.3.9, and 1.4.1, relies on an environment variable to determine the file that provides localized message strings, which allows local users to gain privileges via a file that contains crafted localization data with format string specifiers.
The weakness was presented 03/05/2010 by Ronald Volgers as Bug 558460 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-0393 since 01/27/2010. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/05/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44988 (Debian DSA-2007-1 : cups - format string vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
