Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in TWiki up to 4.2.2 (Content Management System). This affects an unknown functionality of the component Installation. The manipulation of the argument image with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in bin/configure in TWiki before 4.2.3, when a certain step in the installation guide is skipped, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a query string containing a .. (dot dot) in the image variable, and execute arbitrary files via unspecified vectors.
The bug was discovered 08/19/2008. The weakness was presented 09/18/2008 by webDEViL as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-3195 since 07/16/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by webDEViL and been published 3 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 26 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34206 (FreeBSD : twiki -- Arbitrary code execution in session files (9227dcaf-827f-11dd-9cd7-0050568452ac)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 4.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45183), Exploit-DB (6509), Tenable (34206), OSVDB (48221†) and Secunia (SA31849†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
