This vulnerability affects the function CDwnTaskExec::ThreadExec in the library Mshtml.dll of the component PNG Image Handler. Mshtml.dll in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 Gold 7.0.5730 and 8 Beta 8.0.6001 on Windows XP SP2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (failure of subsequent image rendering) via a crafted PNG file, related to an infinite loop in the CDwnTaskExec::ThreadExec function.
The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was disclosed 09/18/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-4127. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1149 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100060 (Microsoft Internet Explorer PNG File Denial of Service - Zero Day).
