A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.4 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function document.loadBindingDocument. Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.17 and 3.x before 3.0.2, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.17, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.12 allow remote attackers to create documents that lack script-handling objects, and execute arbitrary code with chrome privileges, via vectors related to (1) the document.loadBindingDocument function and (2) XSLT.

The weakness was published 09/24/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as Bug 451037 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-4060 since 09/12/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43709 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2008:0879)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165702 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla (SUSE-SA:2008:050)).

Upgrading to version 1.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9130.
