A vulnerability was found in nfs-utils. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function hosts_ctl of the component Access Restriction. The good_client function in nfs-utils 1.0.9, and possibly other versions before 1.1.3, invokes the hosts_ctl function with the wrong order of arguments, which causes TCP Wrappers to ignore netgroups and allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions.
The bug was discovered 08/11/2008. The weakness was disclosed 10/14/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-4552 since 10/14/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 64 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165638 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2009:001)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
