Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Outlook Web Access path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 (Groupware Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component Outlook Web Access. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Open redirect vulnerability in exchweb/bin/redir.asp in Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) for Exchange Server 2003 SP2 (aka build 6.5.7638) allows remote attackers to redirect users to arbitrary web sites and conduct phishing attacks via a URL in the URL parameter.

The bug was discovered 10/15/2008. The weakness was shared 10/20/2008 by Martin (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-1547 since 03/28/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/18/2019). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90500 (Microsoft Outlook Web Access Redirection Weaknesses).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9943.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46061), SecurityFocus (BID 31765†), OSVDB (49230†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-19741†). The entry VDB-1188 is related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
