A vulnerability was found in Sentex jhead up to 2.82. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function DoCommand of the file jhead.c. The DoCommand function in jhead.c in Matthias Wandel jhead 2.84 and earlier allows local users to delete arbitrary files via vectors involving a modified input filename in which (1) a final "z" character is replaced by a "t" character or (2) a final "t" character is replaced by a "z" character.
The bug was discovered 10/15/2008. The weakness was disclosed 10/21/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.launchpad.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-4640 since 10/21/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
