A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office (Office Suite Software) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Publisher. Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3, and 2007 SP2 and SP3, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Publisher file that leverages incorrect memory handling, aka "Publisher Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 12/13/2011 by Will Dormann with Cert/CC as MS11-091 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-3412 since 09/09/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57277 (MS11-091: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2607702)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110161 (Microsoft Office Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-091)).

Applying the patch MS11-091 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11926.
