A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2003 SP3 (Office Suite Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code. Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Publisher file that leverages incorrect handling of values in memory, aka "Publisher Invalid Pointer Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 12/13/2011 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC as MS11-091 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-3411 since 09/09/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57277 (MS11-091: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2607702)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110161 (Microsoft Office Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-091)).
Applying the patch MS11-091 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11925.
