A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Opera Web Browser up to 7.19 (Web Browser). This affects some unknown functionality. The Fast Forward feature in Opera before 9.61, when a page is located in a frame, executes a javascript: URL in the context of the outermost page instead of the page that contains this URL, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.
The bug was discovered 10/21/2008. The weakness was disclosed 10/23/2008 by David Bloom (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-4697 since 10/22/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34508 (FreeBSD : opera -- multiple vulnerabilities (f5c4d7f7-9f4b-11dd-bab1-001999392805)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115998 (Opera Web Browser HTML Injection and Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 7.20 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
