A vulnerability was found in Opera Web Browser up to 9.51 (Web Browser). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function in the library Opera.dll. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Opera.dll in Opera 9.52 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the query string, which is not properly escaped before storage in the History Search database (aka md.dat), a different vector than CVE-2008-4696. NOTE: some of these issues were addressed before 9.60.
The bug was discovered 10/21/2008. The weakness was disclosed 10/23/2008 by Roberto Suggi Liverani (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-4725 since 10/23/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34508 (FreeBSD : opera -- multiple vulnerabilities (f5c4d7f7-9f4b-11dd-bab1-001999392805)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116006 (Opera Web Browser History Search Input Validation Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 9.52 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8537.
