Heap-based buffer overflow in OpenOffice.org (OOo) 2.x before 2.4.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted WMF file associated with a StarOffice/StarSuite document.
The bug was discovered 10/29/2008. The weakness was disclosed 10/30/2008 by Security Team with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-2237 since 05/16/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

Upgrading to version 2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8919.
