Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apache Struts (Programming Tool Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component ParameterInterceptor. The manipulation with the input value ../../ leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ParameterInterceptor component in Apache Struts before 2.3.1.1 does not prevent access to public constructors, which allows remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a crafted parameter that triggers the creation of a Java object.
The weakness was presented 01/03/2012 by Phil (Website). The advisory is shared at struts.apache.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Apache. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0393 since 01/08/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published 2 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69101 (VMware vCenter Operations Manager Arbitrary File Upload (VMSA-2012-0013)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12542 (Apache Struts2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (S2-008)).
Upgrading to version 2.3.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12093.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72089), Exploit-DB (18329), Tenable (69101), OSVDB (78109†) and Secunia (SA47393†).
