A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function X509_V_FLAG_POLICY_CHECK. Double free vulnerability in OpenSSL 0.9.8 before 0.9.8s, when X509_V_FLAG_POLICY_CHECK is enabled, allows remote attackers to have an unspecified impact by triggering failure of a policy check.
The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was published 01/04/2012 by Andrew with Information Security Group at Royal Holloway, University of London (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at aix.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-4109 since 10/18/2011. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2374 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80197 (Juniper Junos Space < 14.1R1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (JSA10659)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216041 (VMWare ESXi 5.0.0 Patch ESXi500-Update02 Missing (KB2033751)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8s or 1.0.0f eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
