Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8s/1.0.0f (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component SSL3. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The SSL 3.0 implementation in OpenSSL before 0.9.8s and 1.x before 1.0.0f does not properly initialize data structures for block cipher padding, which might allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information by decrypting the padding data sent by an SSL peer.
The weakness was released 01/04/2012 by Andrew with Information Security Group at Royal Holloway, University of London (Website). The advisory is shared for download at aix.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4576 since 11/29/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70165 (Juniper Steel-Belted Radius Multiple OpenSSL Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216041 (VMWare ESXi 5.0.0 Patch ESXi500-Update02 Missing (KB2033751)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8s or 1.0.0f eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
