OpenSSL up to 0.9.8s/1.0.0f RFC 3779 Certificate Data Parser resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8s/1.0.0f (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component RFC 3779 Certificate Data Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

OpenSSL before 0.9.8s and 1.x before 1.0.0f, when RFC 3779 support is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure) via an X.509 certificate containing certificate-extension data associated with (1) IP address blocks or (2) Autonomous System (AS) identifiers.

The weakness was disclosed 01/04/2012 by Andrew with Information Security Group at Royal Holloway, University of London (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-4577 since 11/29/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69645 (Amazon Linux AMI : openssl (ALAS-2012-38)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216041 (VMWare ESXi 5.0.0 Patch ESXi500-Update02 Missing (KB2033751)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.8s or 1.0.0f eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72131), Tenable (69645), SecurityFocus (BID 51281†), OSVDB (78189†) and Secunia (SA47426†). The entries VDB-4291, VDB-4514, VDB-4515 and VDB-4519 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
