Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in xine xine-lib (Multimedia Player Software) (affected version not known). This vulnerability affects the function real_parse_headers of the file demux_real.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The real_parse_headers function in demux_real.c in xine-lib 1.1.12, and other 1.1.15 and earlier versions, relies on an untrusted input length value to "reindex into an allocated buffer," which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted value, probably an array index error.
The bug was discovered 08/22/2008. The weakness was presented 11/25/2008 by Will Drewry with CERT (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-5243 since 11/25/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34133 (Fedora 9 : xine-lib-1.1.15-1.fc9 (2008-7512)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
