A vulnerability has been found in Google Chrome up to 16.0.912.75 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file harfbuzz-myanmar.c of the component Glyph Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Stack-based buffer overflow in Google Chrome before 16.0.912.75 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors related to glyph handling.
The weakness was disclosed 01/05/2012 by Boris Zbarsky with Google Chrome Security Team as 108006 (Website). The advisory is available at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-3922 since 10/01/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74789 (openSUSE Security Update : libqt4 (openSUSE-2012-72)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120471 (CentOS Security Update for Qt (CESA-2012:0880)).
Upgrading to version 16.0.912.75 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
