A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Google Chrome up to 16.0.912.75 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is the function xmlStringLenDecodeEntities of the file parser.c of the component libxml2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in libxml2, as used in Google Chrome before 16.0.912.75, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via unknown vectors.
The weakness was published 01/05/2012 by Boris Zbarsky with Google Chrome Security Team as 107128 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3919 since 10/01/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Upgrading to version 16.0.912.75 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
