Linux Kernel up to 2.6.28.10 sctp_rcv/sctp_accept race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.28.10. This affects the function sctp_rcv/sctp_accept. Performing a manipulation results in race condition. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-4348. No exploit is available. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.28.10 (Operating System). This affects the function sctp_rcv/sctp_accept. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the sctp_rcv function in net/sctp/input.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.29 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (system hang) via SCTP packets. NOTE: in some environments, this issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2011-2482.

The issue has been introduced in 12/25/2008. The weakness was published 01/10/2012 as confirmed posting (Red Hat Security Advisory). The advisory is shared at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-4348 since 11/04/2011. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1111 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57485 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2012:0007)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216031 (VMware ESX 4.x Several Security Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2012-0006)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (57485), SecurityFocus (BID 51363†), OSVDB (78303†), Secunia (SA47512†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-34206†). Similar entries are available at VDB-4406, VDB-4543, VDB-4504 and VDB-4544. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
