Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Apache Tomcat (Application Server Software). This affects an unknown function of the component Caching/Recycling. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Apache Tomcat 6.0.30 through 6.0.33 and 7.x before 7.0.22 does not properly perform certain caching and recycling operations involving request objects, which allows remote attackers to obtain unintended read access to IP address and HTTP header information in opportunistic circumstances by reading TCP data.
The bug was discovered 09/22/2011. The weakness was disclosed 01/17/2012 by Alexander Klink with n.runs AG (Website). The advisory is shared at vmware.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-3375 since 08/30/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 117 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74554 (openSUSE Security Update : tomcat6 (openSUSE-2012-129)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120898 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 4 Missing).
Upgrading to version 6.0.33 or 7.0.22 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72422), Tenable (74554), SecurityFocus (BID 51200†), OSVDB (78331†) and Secunia (SA47554†). The entries VDB-3133, VDB-3256, VDB-4542 and VDB-4541 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
