IBM WebSphere Application Server input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in IBM WebSphere. It has been declared as problematic. This affects an unknown part of the component Application Server. Such manipulation leads to input validation. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2012-0193. The attack can be executed remotely. Additionally, an exploit exists. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in IBM WebSphere (Application Server Software) (version now known). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Application Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) 6.0 through 6.0.2.43, 6.1 before 6.1.0.43, 7.0 before 7.0.0.23, and 8.0 before 8.0.0.3 computes hash values for form parameters without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) by sending many crafted parameters.

The weakness was released 01/17/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www-304.ibm.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0193 since 12/14/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of allinurl:wps/portal/ login it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802418 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86992 (IBM WebSphere Application Server Java Hash Data Structure Denial of Service (PM53930)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72298), Tenable (802418), SecurityFocus (BID 51441†), OSVDB (78321†) and Secunia (SA47557†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-4554. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
