Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in MediaWiki before 1.6.11, 1.12.x before 1.12.2, and 1.13.x before 1.13.3, when Internet Explorer is used and uploads are enabled, or an SVG scripting browser is used and SVG uploads are enabled, allows remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary web script or HTML by editing a wiki page.

The bug was discovered 12/15/2008. The weakness was shared 12/19/2008 by David Remahl (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secunia.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-5250 since 11/26/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35679 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : mediawiki (mediawiki-5987)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 1.13.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
