The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
OpenSSL 0.9.8s and 1.0.0f does not properly support DTLS applications, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via unspecified vectors related to an out-of-bounds read. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incorrect fix for CVE-2011-4108.
The issue has been introduced in 01/04/2012. The weakness was presented 01/18/2012 by Martin with Cisco (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0050 since 12/07/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74859 (openSUSE Security Update : openssl (openSUSE-2012-99)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216041 (VMWare ESXi 5.0.0 Patch ESXi500-Update02 Missing (KB2033751)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8t or 1.0.0g eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
