Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.23 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in net/sctp/sm_statefuns.c in the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (sctp) implementation in the Linux kernel before 2.6.28-git8 allows remote attackers to have an unknown impact via an FWD-TSN (aka FORWARD-TSN) chunk with a large stream ID.
The bug was discovered 01/05/2009. The weakness was disclosed 01/07/2009 by sgrakkyu (Website). The advisory is available at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0065 since 01/07/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by sgrakkyu in ANSI C and been published 4 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 456 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63879 (RHEL 5 : kernel (RHSA-2009:1055)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165635 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2009:017)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12426.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47811), Exploit-DB (8556), Tenable (63879), SecurityFocus (BID 33113†) and OSVDB (51253†).
