A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Dogtag Certificate System up to 1.0. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function verifyProof. The verifyProof function in the Token Processing System (TPS) component in Red Hat Certificate System (RHCS) 7.1 through 7.3 and Dogtag Certificate System 1.0 returns successfully even when token enrollment did not use the hardware key, which allows remote authenticated users with enrollment privileges to bypass intended authentication policies by performing enrollment with a software key.
The bug was discovered 01/29/2009. The weakness was published 01/30/2009 with Red Hat (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-5082 since 11/14/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
