Use-after-free vulnerability in win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application that triggers keyboard layout errors, aka "Keyboard Layout Use After Free Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 02/14/2012 by Tarjei Mandt with Azimuth Security as MS12-008 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0154 since 12/13/2011. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 902810 (Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (2660465)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90775 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-008)).
Applying the patch MS12-008 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
