Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 does not properly handle the creation and initialization of string objects, which allows remote attackers to read data from arbitrary process-memory locations via a crafted web site, aka "Null Byte Information Disclosure Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 03/16/2010. The weakness was shared 02/14/2012 by Stephen Fewer as MS12-010 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0012 since 11/09/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 700 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57944 (MS12-010: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2647516)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100115 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS12-010)).

Applying the patch MS12-010 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.
