Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in themeweb.aspx in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2010 Gold and SP1 and SharePoint Foundation 2010 Gold and SP1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via JavaScript sequences in a URL, aka "XSS in themeweb.aspx Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 02/14/2012 as MS12-011 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0144 since 12/13/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. By approaching the search of inurl:themeweb.aspx it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57945 (MS12-011 : Vulnerabilities in Microsoft SharePoint Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2663841)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90777 (Microsoft SharePoint Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS12-011)).
Applying the patch MS12-011 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12073.
