A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft SharePoint 2010 (Groupware Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file wizardlist.aspx. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in wizardlist.aspx in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2010 Gold and SP1 and SharePoint Foundation 2010 Gold and SP1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via JavaScript sequences in a URL, aka "XSS in wizardlist.aspx Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 02/14/2012 by John as MS12-011 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0145 since 12/13/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a private exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
After 2 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. By approaching the search of inurl:wizardlist.aspx it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57945 (MS12-011 : Vulnerabilities in Microsoft SharePoint Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2663841)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90777 (Microsoft SharePoint Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS12-011)).
Applying the patch MS12-011 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12074.
