A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown part of the file afd.sys. afd.sys in the Ancillary Function Driver in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 does not properly validate user-mode input passed to kernel mode, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Ancillary Function Driver Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 02/14/2012 by Tarjei Mandt with Azimuth Security as MS12-009 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0149 since 12/13/2011. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57943 (MS12-009: Vulnerabilities in Ancillary Function Driver Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2645640)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90776 (Microsoft Ancillary Function Driver Elevation of Privilege (MS12-009)).
Applying the patch MS12-009 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
