A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 up to 9 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown code of the component HTML Layout Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 through 9 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing a deleted object, aka "HTML Layout Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was presented 02/14/2012 by Stephen Fewer with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MS12-010 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0011 since 11/09/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2393 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57944 (MS12-010: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2647516)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100115 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS12-010)).
Applying the patch MS12-010 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12065.
